What is a Hedge

Hedges are usually planted to define property boundaries and provide privacy or to give shelter from prevailing winds. They can be formal, such as clipped Buxus (box), Taxus (yew) and Fagus (beech) or informal with colourful foliage or flowers, like Viburnum or Crataegus (hawthorn).

Benefit of a mature hedge

A mature hedge can provide numerous benefits, including:

***Privacy: A mature hedge can act as a natural barrier and provide privacy to your property, shielding it from the view of passersby.

***Windbreak: A well-established hedge can reduce wind speeds and provide a natural windbreak, which can help protect your property from wind damage.

***Noise reduction: A mature hedge can help absorb noise from nearby roads or other sources, providing a quieter environment for your home or garden.

***Wildlife habitat: Hedges are natural habitats for a wide range of birds, insects, and small mammals, providing food, shelter, and nesting opportunities.

***Aesthetics: A mature hedge can enhance the appearance of your property, providing a lush, green backdrop for your garden.

***Property value: A mature hedge can increase the value of your property by enhancing its curb appeal and providing desirable features for potential buyers.

***Overall, a mature hedge can provide a range of benefits that make it a valuable addition to any property.

Here are some hedge plants we recommend and plant regularly :

***Beech (Fagus sylvatica) – Beech is a deciduous tree that can be used for hedging, and is often used in formal gardens due to its neat appearance and attractive foliage.

***Yew (Taxus baccata) – Yew is a coniferous evergreen that can be shaped into formal hedges due to its dense foliage and ability to regenerate from old wood. These come from 30cm high to 3m and higher

***Privet (Ligustrum spp.) – Privet is a hardy evergreen shrub that is commonly used for hedging due to its fast growth and ability to tolerate pruning.

***Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) – A popular hedging plant due to its fast growth, attractive foliage, and ability to provide year-round privacy. The species we use is ‘genolia’

***Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) – Hornbeam is a deciduous tree that can be used for hedging, and is popular due to its fast growth and ability to maintain a neat, formal appearance with regular pruning.

***Box (Buxus sempervirens) – Box is a slow-growing evergreen shrub that is commonly used for low hedges and topiary due to its dense, compact growth habit.

These are just a few options to consider, and there are many other suitable hedge plants for depending on your specific needs and growing conditions. All plants can be planted in small plants but we’d recommend planting to the height required as it will take time to grow. Once planted to the height required, it’s just a case of maintaining it

Pleached hedges

Pleached trees are trees that have been trained to form a stunning screen of branches and foliage on a single, straight stem. When they are planted in rows at set distances, they form an elevated ‘green wall’ effect, which can be a great, natural alternative to high fencing.
