My Journey into Wellness Planting and the Winter Retreat That Inspired It

Gardening has always been more than a career for me—it’s a passion and a way of connecting with nature. Over the years, I’ve poured my energy into designing beautiful outdoor spaces, but recently, I’ve shifted my focus to something even deeper: wellness planting. This new direction was profoundly influenced by a transformative winter retreat in Poland, where I discovered the incredible connection between nature, breath work, and cold exposure.

Why I’m Focusing on Wellness Planting

Gardens have always been places of beauty, but I’ve come to see them as sanctuaries for well-being. In today’s fast-paced world, so many people crave a space to unwind, recharge, and reconnect with themselves. I believe a garden can be more than a collection of plants—it can be a healing space that restores balance and peace.

For me, this shift towards wellness planting is deeply personal. After experiencing the challenges of daily life and the loss of my father, I found immense comfort and clarity in nature. Tending to a garden isn’t just physical work; it’s a mindful act that allows you to slow down and focus on the present. This realisation has shaped my approach to gardening and inspired me to help others create spaces that bring them the same sense of calm and renewal.

The Polish Retreat That Transformed My Perspective

In the depths of winter, I joined a retreat in Poland that forever changed how I view the relationship between nature and well-being. The retreat was centred on breath work, cold exposure, and reconnecting with the natural world—three practices that were as challenging as they were transformative.

The setting was a pristine winter landscape: snow-covered forests, frozen rivers, and crisp, biting air. Each day, we practised focused breath work that calmed the mind and prepared the body for the icy challenges ahead. Cold exposure, whether through immersion in freezing water or hikes in sub-zero temperatures, taught me the incredible resilience of the human body when you fully embrace the present moment.

During these moments of discomfort, I felt a deep connection to nature. The simplicity of the snowy environment, the quiet stillness, and the raw beauty of the cold reminded me of the power of the natural world to ground and heal us. It was in those freezing moments that I realised how nature has an innate ability to bring us back to ourselves.

This retreat wasn’t just about physical endurance—it was about mental clarity, resilience, and finding peace in the most unexpected places. These lessons now influence everything I do, especially in my work with wellness planting.

Bringing Wellness into the Garden

The lessons I learned in Poland have deeply shaped my approach to gardening. Gardens, much like the natural landscapes I experienced on the retreat, have the power to restore and rejuvenate. Through wellness planting, I aim to bring that same sense of connection and peace into your outdoor space.

Here’s how my experience informs my work:

Breath Work and Space: A garden designed for wellness invites you to pause, breathe deeply, and let go of stress.

Mindful Planting: Just as I found calm in the snowy forests, I choose plants that promote relaxation, such as lavender, jasmine, and ferns.

Cold and Texture: Incorporating elements like reflective water features or tactile plants reminds us of the sensory connection we have with nature.

What Wellness Planting Means to Me

For me, wellness planting is about more than creating beautiful gardens—it’s about helping people reconnect with themselves and their surroundings. It’s about crafting spaces that encourage you to slow down, breathe, and feel at peace.

My experience in Poland taught me that true wellness comes from being present and embracing the natural world, even in its rawest form. I now carry that lesson into every garden I design, ensuring that each space is not just functional, but restorative.
